Jewellery DiscolourationUpdated 2 hours ago
Why has my jewellery changed colour?
There are two common reasons why jewellery may change in appearance over time: tarnishing and plating wear.
Understanding the difference can help to determine the best way to care for your jewellery.
What is tarnishing?
Tarnishing is a natural process that causes a dark discolouration of the metal.
This can occur when the acidity of your skin (your pH balance) reacts with the jewellery. It is most commonly seen on areas that come into direct contact with the skin, such as earring posts.
Tarnishing can also be influenced by:
- Water exposure
- Sweat
- Perfumes and cosmetics
- Everyday wear
In most cases, tarnishing can be improved with a gentle clean or polish.
What is plating wear?
Plating wear occurs when the outer plated layer of jewellery gradually wears away over time. You may see the base metal colour showing.
As plating is a surface finish, some wear is expected with regular use. However, proper jewellery care can significantly slow this process and help extend the life of the plating.
Factors that may accelerate plating wear include:
- Frequent contact with water
- Exposure to perfumes, lotions, and cosmetics
- Friction against skin, clothing, or other surfaces
- Regular daily wear
Can plating wear be repaired by cleaning?
No. Unlike tarnishing, plating wear cannot be resolved through cleaning, as it involves the gradual wearing away of the plated surface layer.
Is tarnishing covered under warranty?
Tarnishing is a natural reaction that can occur due to environmental factors and individual skin chemistry. It is not typically considered a manufacturing fault.

Is plating wear covered under warranty?
As plating wear is a natural result of use over time, it is not covered under our warranty policy unless a manufacturing fault is identified.
How can I prevent tarnishing and plating wear?
To help keep your jewellery looking its best:
- Remove jewellery before swimming, showering, or exercising
- Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, and cosmetics
- Store pieces in a dry, clean environment
- Clean jewellery regularly using appropriate cleaning methods
- Remove jewellery before sleeping where possible
