Frequently Asked Questions About Klarna
Find quick answers to the most common questions about using Klarna to pay for your purchases.
Who can use Klarna / Is it available internationally?
Klarna is a global payment provider available to shoppers in many countries, including the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most of Europe (such as Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, and the Netherlands).
To use Klarna, you must meet the following general requirements:
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old (or the legal age of majority in your country).
- Residency & Currency: You must be a resident of a supported country, and your billing address must match the country/currency in which you are checking out. (For example, to check out using GBP, you must be a UK resident; to check out in USD, you must be a US resident).
- Payment Method: You must have a valid payment card or bank account in your name with a positive credit history.
- Verification: You must be able to receive mobile verification codes via text to register your account.
Will Klarna perform a credit check?
Yes. Klarna performs a "soft" credit check at checkout. This is used to verify your identity and assess your financial eligibility. This check does not affect your credit score and is not visible to other lenders. However, please note that failing to make payments on time will be reported to credit bureaus, which will harm your credit score and make it harder to obtain credit in the future.
Why was I declined for Klarna?
Klarna assesses every single transaction individually to promote responsible spending. Your eligibility is determined by a combination of factors, including:
- Your credit history.
- The total value of the items in your basket.
- Your history of repaying previous Klarna purchases.
- Having an outstanding unpaid balance with Klarna.
- Even if you have been approved in the past, a new transaction may still be declined.
Payments & FeesWhat are my payment options?
We offer two popular interest-free options at checkout:
- Pay in 3 (or Pay in 4 depending on your country): The total cost of your order is split into equal installments. The first is paid at checkout, and the remaining payments are taken automatically over the following weeks.
- Pay in 30 Days (Pay Later): Your order is shipped immediately. You have up to 30 days from the shipment date to pay the balance in full.
How do I pay my balance?
Payments are processed automatically from the debit or credit card you link to your Klarna account. You can also make manual, early payments at any time by logging into the Klarna App or the Klarna website.
What happens if I miss a payment?
If a scheduled payment fails, Klarna will automatically try to collect the funds again. If that attempt fails, you may be charged a late fee (typically up to £5 in the UK, or equivalent local fees in other regions). Missing payments can also result in your account being passed to a debt collection agency and will negatively affect your credit score.
Returns & Refunds
How do returns work when paying with Klarna?
Your right to return items is completely unaffected by your payment period, and you will only ever pay for the items you decide to keep.
As soon as we ship your order, Klarna will email you your invoice/payment schedule, which will clearly state your payment due dates.
What should I do if my payment date is near but my return is still in transit?
If your payment deadline is approaching and we are still processing your return, we highly recommend marking your items as returned in the Klarna portal.
You can do this easily by logging into the Klarna App or Portal and selecting "Report a Return" on your order. This temporarily pauses your payment schedule so you will not receive payment reminders or incur late fees while your return is being processed.
If you require further assistance with your return, please reach out to our Customer Connection Team at [email protected]
When will my Klarna invoice be updated?
Once our team receives and completes your return, it will notify Klarna immediately. They will instantly update your statement:
- If you made a partial return: Klarna will adjust your remaining installments, and you will receive an updated invoice showing only the balance for the items you kept.
- If you made a full return: Klarna will cancel all remaining payments and refund any installments you have already paid.
How long does a refund take?
Once we process your return, your refund will be issued by Klarna directly back to your original payment card. From there it typically takes 5 to 7 working days to clear into your account.
Is Klarna secure?
Yes. Klarna uses industry-standard security measures and encryption to keep your personal data and card details perfectly safe. Additionally, you are covered by Klarna's Buyer Protection Policy. This means you do not have to pay for your ordered goods until you have physically received them, shielding you from issues like lost parcels or incorrect orders.
